Jouet sans âge, répandu dès l’Antiquité, le hochet a longtemps été investi d’une fonction magique, qui s’est perdue depuis. Pour l’essentiel, il doit être facile à saisir, ne pas être trop lourd, faire du bruit lorsqu’on l’agite et ne pas présenter d’angle aigu qui pourrait blesser le bébé. À partir de cette formule, un grand nombre de variantes ont été déclinées.
Au XXe siècle, cet objet familier a connu une révolution grâce aux nouvelles théories sur le développement de l’enfant qui ont inspiré les designers. Cet ouvrage présente les hochets les plus inventifs de cette époque et explore une créativité inédite dans le design et la diffusion des jouets d’éveil.

A timeless toy, played with since antiquity, the rattle was long invested with magical properties that have since been lost. In essence, it must be easy to grip, not be too heavy, make a noise when shaken, and have no sharp angles that might hurt the baby. From these basic criteria, a multitude of variations have evolved.

Stéphane Jacob
Psychologue spécialisé dans le domaine de l’enfance et dans l’approche neuropsychologique, docteur en psychologie, il a été commissaire de l’exposition « Quand j’étais bébé... » au musée du Jouet de Poissy, en 2010.
A psychologist specializing in childhood and neuropsychology, he holds a PhD in psychology. He curated the exhibitions “Quand j’étais bébé...” (When I was a baby …) at the Musée du Jouet in Poissy, in 2010.

Maynard Hale Lyndon
Diplômé en design et architecture, il a fondé en 1967 sa propre boutique de design, ColorForm, à Santa Monica (Californie), puis occupé un poste clé au sein de l’entreprise Creative Playthings, au début des années 1970. Collectionneur, il a réuni en près de soixante ans plus de 300 hochets.
Graduated in design and architecture, in 1967 he founded a toy shop, ColorForm, in Santa Monica, California, he had a key position within the company Creative Playthings, in early 1970s. A collector for nearly sixty years, he has amassed more than 300 rattles.

Toshiko Nishikawa
Graphiste de formation, elle a fondé la compagnie Niki Tiki, en 1971, à Tokyo, dans le but de diffuser au Japon les jouets des designers européens, tels qu’Antonio Vitali, Fredun Shapur, ainsi que les créations de la marque suisse Naef dont elle est devenue le distributeur exclusif.
Trained as a graphic designer, she founded Niki Tiki in Tokyo, in 1971, to distribute the toys of European designers as Antonio Vitali, Fredun Shapur, and became the exclusive importer of the Swiss toy brand Naef on the Japanese market.

Amy F. Ogata
Historienne d’art, architecture, design et arts appliqués, elle enseigne à l’University of Southern California, à Los Angeles. Elle a collaboré à l’exposition « Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900–2000 » au MoMA en 2012, et est l’auteure de Fredun Shapur: Playing with design (Piqpoq, 2013), entre autres.
